Enjoy the freedom of driving yourself
Personally, I find driving myself in Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda and Uganda with a 4x4 an incredible top experience. Obviously, you have the ultimate freedom and you can do whatever you feel like doing. We often stop by animals ourselves (the small ones too, a dik-dik is my personal favourite), switch off the engine and enjoy the African nature in complete silence. No one around you, no unnatural sounds, wonderful.
You also come into contact with the local population in a different way, so if you ask me, definitely do it. However, it certainly has disadvantages too. A driver-guide knows the spots with a greater chance of animals being there, whereas driving yourself you often just drive around a bit and you'll normally see fewer animals than with a driver. The driver also has a lot of knowledge of his country and the animals, which you'll miss out on now. Driving yourself is also of course more demanding because you have to arrange and do everything yourself. But that's exactly what makes it so much fun!
