Thailand, known the world over for its lush landscapes, golden temples, lively street life and rich cultural heritage, has been a fixture on the global tourist map for decades. The country also knows the harmful consequences of mass tourism, however: environmental degradation, overtourism and cultural erosion.
In recent years Thailand has embraced a new approach that goes beyond merely minimising harm. Regenerative tourism creates positive impact, revitalises ecosystems and strengthens local communities, while preserving the nation's unique heritage.
What is regenerative tourism?
Regenerative tourism goes a step further than sustainable tourism's aim of doing no harm; it actively sets out to do good. It focuses on restoring ecosystems, improving biodiversity and leaving destinations in a better state.
For Thailand this means initiatives that support local cultures, increase biodiversity and breathe new life into communities affected by earlier tourist impacts. Crucially, tourists play a vital part in these initiatives; their active participation is a key factor in the success of the regenerative process.
