Travelling is not only enjoyable, it is healthy too. According to Jessica de Bloom, work and organisational psychologist at the University of Groningen, and Ad Vingerhoets, professor of health psychology at Tilburg University, travelling reduces the risk of illness, lowers your stress level and contributes to a sense of happiness (nu.nl, 14 February 2019).
There is a downside to travelling, however. More and more people are setting off, and as a result many beautiful cities and regions are being trampled.
The Spanish region of Extremadura lies a stone's throw from Madrid and Seville, yet it still has that charm. On a walking or cycling holiday in this region you feel what peace and space do for you. What is more, you are choosing a healthy, active holiday with an eye for the environment, the local culture and the local economy. And tourists? The chances are you will not meet any.
Spring is one of the loveliest seasons to visit Extremadura. Have a look at www.tierragua.nl for trips to places off the beaten track.
And if you want to leave the smallest possible ecological footprint, you can reach this region by public transport as well.
