Albania (Albanian: Shqipëria, Gheg dialect; Shqipnia), officially the Republic of Albania (Republika e Shqipërisë, Gheg: Republika e Shqipnisë), is a republic in the west of the Balkan Peninsula. The official and most widely spoken language is Albanian. The country borders, clockwise, Montenegro, Kosovo, North Macedonia, Greece and the Ionian and Adriatic Sea. The capital and largest city of Albania is Tirana in the centre of the country, which houses 610,070 (2015 census) of the more than 3 million inhabitants in total. Albania was for centuries a remote corner of the Ottoman Empire.
