Bulgaria (Bulgarian: България, Balgarija), officially the Republic of Bulgaria (Bulgarian: Република България, Repoeblika Balgarija), is a country in Southeast Europe, located in the east of the Balkan Peninsula and south of the river Danube. The country has a population of 7,101,510 (2017) and an area of 110,900 km². Sofia is the capital and, with over 1 million inhabitants, the largest city in the country. Other important cities are Varna and Burgas (the main ports of Bulgaria on the Black Sea), Plovdiv and Ruse. Bulgarian music is popular among lovers of world music or folk music because of the occurrence of irregular time signatures.
