Cape Verde (Cabo Verde; IPA: [ˈkabu ˈveɾdɨ]) or the Cape Verde Islands, officially the Republic of Cabo Verde, is a country consisting of an island group of volcanic origin off the west coast of Africa in the North Atlantic Ocean. The archipelago used to be called Ilhas de Cabo Verde (Islands of the Green Cape) and was so named because of the location of the islands in relation to Cape Verde (Green Cape), the westernmost point of the African mainland in Senegal. The Dutch name is a partial translation of this. The government of Cape Verde has requested the United Nations to refer to the country in all languages by the Cape Verdean name Cabo Verde.
