Congo, officially the Democratic Republic of the Congo, in short the DRC (French: République démocratique du Congo), is a country in central Africa. To distinguish it from the neighbouring country of the same name, the name of the capital Kinshasa is added to the name of the country as Congo-Kinshasa. Congo borders Congo-Brazzaville, the Central African Republic, South Sudan, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Tanzania, Zambia, Angola and the Angolan exclave of Cabinda. It is a former Belgian colony that was previously the private property of King Leopold II of Belgium. In the period 1971-1997 the country was called Zaire.
