The Republic of Cyprus (Greek: Κυπριακή Δημοκρατία, Kypriakí Dimokratía; Turkish: Kıbrıs Cumhuriyeti) is located on the eponymous island of Cyprus in the eastern Mediterranean Sea, approx. 70 km south of Turkey and 105 km west of Syria. Geographically, Cyprus belongs to Asia, but for political and cultural reasons it is also counted as part of Europe. Cyprus has been a member of the European Union since 2004. In 1974, the northern part of the island was occupied by Turkey, and since 1983 this part has called itself the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.
