Eritrea, officially the State of Eritrea (Tigrinya: ሃገረ ኤርትራ, Hagere Ertra, Arabic: دولة إرتريا, Dawlat Iritriyya), is a country in the east of Africa. It borders Sudan in the northwest, Ethiopia in the south, Djibouti in the southeast and the Red Sea in the east and northeast. It was a province of Ethiopia for several decades. The country has been independent since 1991, and in 1993 it was recognised by the UN as an independent country.
