The Faroe Islands [ˈfɛːrøər]? (Faroese: Føroyar; Danish: Færøerne) are an archipelago located in the northern Atlantic Ocean in the triangle formed by Scotland, Norway and Iceland. The archipelago is an autonomous part of the Kingdom of Denmark that does not belong to the European Union. The name Faroe Islands probably means Sheep Islands (Danish: får means sheep; øer means islands). It is home to 51,628 (2020) people, almost 40 per cent of whom live in the capital, Tórshavn.
