Guatemala, officially the Republic of Guatemala (Spanish: República de Guatemala), is a country in Central America, bordering Mexico, Belize, Honduras and El Salvador. Guatemala has an extremely varied landscape. In the centre and northwest of the country lies a highland plateau with mountain and volcano peaks rising above 4000 metres. In the department of Petén lie the famous Maya ruins of Tikal. The southern coastal region and the west of Guatemala are relatively flat and are intensively used for growing sugar cane, fruit cultivation and livestock farming. The capital is Guatemala City, which is located in the department of Guatemala.
