About this destination

The territory of present-day Hungary is first mentioned when the Romans, around the beginning of our era, occupied the part west of the Danube and added it to the province of Pannonia. The country was then inhabited by Illyrians and Celts, who soon came under the influence of Roman culture. However, the empire was increasingly threatened by the 'barbarians' on the other side of the Danube, and in the 5th century the Romans could no longer defend the border against the Huns. After the Huns, the territory on both sides of the Danube fell into the hands of a succession of different peoples of Germanic, Iranian, Turkic or Slavic background.
