Ireland (Irish: Éire, English: Ireland) officially the Republic of Ireland (Irish: Poblacht na hÉireann, English: Republic of Ireland) European country that covers approximately 80 percent of the island of the same name. The other twenty percent of this island belongs to Northern Ireland, a region with a broad form of self-government, which belongs to the United Kingdom. To distinguish the country from the island, it is referred to as the Republic of Ireland (Irish: Poblacht na hÉireann, English: Republic of Ireland). Since 1949 this designation has held the status of the official description of the country. The official, ceremonial name, however, has simply been Ireland since 1937.
