Latvia (Latvian: Latvija; Latgalian: Latgola; Livonian: Lețmō), officially the Republic of Latvia (Latvian: Latvijas Republika; Livonian: Leţmō Vabāmō), is a country in Northeastern Europe and one of the Baltic states on the Baltic Sea. The country is bordered by Estonia in the north, Lithuania and Belarus in the south, Russia in the east, and it shares a maritime border with Sweden in the west. Latvia, with 2,067,887 (2011) inhabitants and an area of 64,589 km², is one of the least and most sparsely populated countries in the European Union. The capital of Latvia is Riga, the official language is Latvian and the currency is the euro (as of 1 January 2014, before that it was the Latvian lats).
