Mali, officially the Republic of Mali, is a country in Africa. The north and northeast lie in the Sahara, the south and southwest in the Sahel. The country is completely cut off from the sea. French is the official language. In addition, Bambara and other traditional languages are also recognised. The capital Bamako lies in the southwest of the country. Mali has just over 18 million inhabitants, of whom more than 10% live in and around the capital. It is one of the poorest countries in the world.
