Mauritius is an independent republic in the Indian Ocean, consisting of several islands. The country lies approximately 855 km east of Madagascar and approximately 1800 km east of the African mainland. Mauritius is counted among the African countries. The republic of Mauritius includes the islands of Mauritius (1,864 km²), Rodrigues (109 km²), the Agalega Islands and the Cargados Carajos (St. Brandon), which within the British Commonwealth are also known as the Lesser Dependencies and together measure only 71 km².
