About this destination

Mayotte is a French overseas department in the Comoros archipelago, between Madagascar and Mozambique. The island is ringed by a coral reef that encloses one of the largest lagoons in the world. Between roughly July and October humpback whales come here to calve, and on beaches such as N'Gouja you swim with sea turtles. The capital, Mamoudzou, is on the main island of Grande-Terre. There are flights via Réunion and from Paris. Check the current travel advice before you go.

Best time to visit

May–October (dry season); July–October for whales
