Montenegro (from Venetian: 'black mountain'; Montenegrin: Црна Гора, Crna Gora) is a country in the Balkans. It lies on the Adriatic Sea opposite Italy and borders, clockwise from the sea, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Kosovo and Albania. The Montenegrin capital is Podgorica. Montenegro has a population of 642,550 (2017) inhabitants over an area of 14,026 km². Since December 2010 it has been a candidate member of the European Union, and since 5 June 2017 the country has been a member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation.
