About this destination

Nicaragua, officially the Republic of Nicaragua, is a country in Central America that borders Honduras to the north, Costa Rica to the south, the Pacific Ocean to the west and the Caribbean Sea to the east. The capital and largest city of the country is Managua. The name of the country possibly comes from Nicarao, the leader of the indigenous tribe that lived around Lake Nicaragua. Nicaragua was visited by Christopher Columbus in 1502 and was conquered by the Spanish in 1522. After briefly belonging to Mexico, it became independent in 1823 as part of the United Provinces of Central America.
