Niger, officially the Republic of Niger, is an African country that lies partly in and partly south of the Sahara. The country has no sea coast and borders seven countries: Algeria, Libya, Chad, Nigeria, Benin, Burkina Faso and Mali. Niger is a republic and is one of the countries that emerged in 1960 from the French colony of French West Africa. The capital of Niger is Niamey. The country is named after the Niger River. Parts of the country lie in a belt called the Sahel, formerly also known as the Sudan, not to be confused with the present-day state named Sudan in the eastern part of that belt.
