North Macedonia, officially the Republic of North Macedonia (Macedonian: Република Северна Македонија, pronunciation (info/explanation)) (Albanian: Republika e Maqedonisë së Veriut) is a country in the middle of the Balkan Peninsula in South-East Europe. It is the successor to one of the constituent republics of the former Yugoslavia. The constituent republic became independent in September 1991 under the name Macedonia. In 1993 North Macedonia became a member of the United Nations, but under the provisional name Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (abbreviated in English as FYROM), owing to a dispute with Greece over the rights to the name Macedonia.
