Portugal, officially the Portuguese Republic (Portuguese: República Portuguesa), is a country in the extreme southwest of Europe. It forms the western part of the Iberian Peninsula. To the east and north it borders Spain, its only neighbouring country, and to the south and west the Atlantic Ocean. Portugal also includes the Azores and Madeira, two archipelagos in this ocean. The country has an unmistakably maritime character. On a territory of 92,212 km² - three times the surface area of Belgium and more than twice the surface area of the Netherlands - live 10.8 million inhabitants. The capital and also the largest city of the country is Lisbon.
