Slovenia, officially the Republic of Slovenia (Slovenian: Republika Slovenija), is a country in Central Europe on the southern edge of the Alps, and is a member of the European Union. It is bordered by Austria in the north, Italy and the Adriatic Sea in the west, Croatia in the south and east and Hungary in the northeast. The country is small, densely forested and mountainous. In the west, the country has a short Adriatic coastline. The border with Austria is largely formed by the watershed of the Karawanken mountain ridge, with peaks above 2000 m, which are part of the Alps. The capital and also the largest city is Ljubljana.
