Slovakia (Slovak: Slovensko) is a country in Central Europe. The official name is the Slovak Republic (Slovak: Slovenská Republika). The capital and largest city of the country is Bratislava. In total, Slovakia has more than five million inhabitants. It is a predominantly mountainous country and a landlocked state, bordered by the Czech Republic in the northwest, Poland in the north, Ukraine in the east, Hungary in the south and Austria in the west. During the twentieth century, Slovakia formed one whole with the linguistically and culturally closely related Czech Republic under the name Czechoslovakia. Slovak history, however, differs greatly from Czech history.
