Belarus (Belarusian: Беларусь, transliterated as Belarus or Belarus; Łacinka: Biełaruś; Russian: Беларусь), officially the Republic of Belarus, is a landlocked country in Eastern Europe. The country borders Russia in the northeast, Ukraine in the south, Poland in the west, and Lithuania and Latvia in the northwest. The capital is Minsk. Belarus was, together with Russia and Ukraine among others, one of the original Soviet republics. The country declared its independence on 25 August 1991, following the collapse of the Soviet Union.
