Switzerland (German: die Schweiz, French: la Suisse, Italian: la Svizzera, Romansh: Svizra, Latin: Helvetia), officially the Swiss Confederation (also known as the Swiss Federal State or Swiss Confederacy; German: Schweizerische Eidgenossenschaft, French: Confédération suisse, Italian: Confederazione svizzera, Romansh: Confederaziun svizra, Latin: Confœderatio Helvetica) is a country in western Europe bordered by Germany to the north, France to the west, Italy to the south, and Austria and Liechtenstein to the east. Switzerland is a landlocked state and Alpine country with an area of 41,284 km² and approximately 8.6 million inhabitants (2019).
