About this destination

American Samoa (Dutch: Amerikaans-Samoa, pronounced /əˈmɛrɪkən səˈmoʊə/) is an overseas territory of the United States in the Southern Pacific Ocean, comprising the eastern part of the Samoa islands. Samoa was already inhabited around 1000 BC and was reached by European explorers in the 18th century. The international rivalry over these islands was resolved in 1899 when Germany and the United States divided the Samoan archipelago. From then on, the US administered a smaller group of eastern islands with the port of Pago Pago. The western islands now form the independent state of Samoa.
