About this destination
Anguilla is waarschijnlijk sinds 1300 voor Christus bewoond door de Cariben. De oudste restanten van een nederzetting daarvan stamt uit 600. Anguilla has probably been inhabited by the Caribs since 1300 BC. The oldest remains of a settlement from them date from 600. According to some, the island was discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1493; what is certain is that the Frenchman Pierre Laudonnaire visited the island in 1565. The first colonial power to lay claim to the island was the Dutch West India Company in 1631. That year, they began building a small fort. The Spanish conquered the island in 1633 and destroyed the fort. The stones from it were used by the Dutch to repair another fort on Sint Maarten.
