About this destination
The Bahamas consist of an archipelago of 700 islands and 2,000 cays (or keys = sand/coral flats), located in the Atlantic Ocean, east of the American state of Florida, north of Cuba and Haiti, and west of the British Turks and Caicos Islands. The country has just over 391,000 inhabitants across an area of 13,878 km² (comparable to the area of the Flemish Region). Of all the islands, only 30 to 40 are inhabited. The largest island is Andros, about 180 kilometres southeast of Florida. The Bimini Islands lie to the northwest of it. To the north lies Grand Bahama, with the second-largest city: Freeport. Great Abaco lies to the east of that.
