Kiribati ((IPA): [ˈkiːrɨbæs]?), officially the Republic of Kiribati, is an island republic in Oceania. The country lies in the Pacific Ocean and is part of the regions of Micronesia (Gilbert Islands) and Polynesia (Phoenix and Line Islands). Kiribati consists for the most part of three extensive island groups, from west to east these are the Gilbert Islands, the Phoenix Islands and most of the Line Islands. West of the Gilbert Islands also lies the island of Banaba. Of the Line Islands, Jarvis, Kingman Reef and Palmyra Atoll do not belong to Kiribati but to the United States.
