Nauru (Nauruan: Naoero), officially the Republic of Nauru, is an island state and republic in Micronesia in the Pacific Ocean. The nearest country is the island of Banaba in Kiribati, 300 kilometres east of Nauru. The island lies north-west of Tuvalu, north of the Solomon Islands, north-east of Papua New Guinea, south-east of Micronesia and south of the Marshall Islands. With 11,000 (2019) inhabitants (Nauruans) and an area of 21 km² (roughly half the size of the Wadden island of Schiermonnikoog), Nauru is the smallest republic and the smallest island state in the world and the smallest country in Oceania.
