New Caledonia (French: Nouvelle-Calédonie) is a French overseas collectivity with a special status, covering an area of 18,575 km². It consists of the main island of Grande Terre, which is also called New Caledonia, the Loyalty Islands, of which Maré, Lifou and Ouvéa are the most important, and a number of smaller islands. The archipelago lies in the Pacific Ocean: east of Australia, south of Vanuatu, west of Fiji and north of New Zealand. The population numbers 290,009 (2020). The currency is the CFP franc. The population consists mainly of Melanesians and Europeans. There are 25 airports in the area.
