Niue (Niuean: Niuē) is an island, situated in the southern hemisphere in the Pacific Ocean, in Polynesia, about 700 km east of Tonga and south of American Samoa. The island has an area of 260 km² and its highest point is 65 metres. The island is not independent, but has a free association with New Zealand. The island has a population of 1626 (2015). The current premier is the independent Dalton Tagelagi; the capital is Alofi, which has 581 inhabitants (2006). Niue is one of the largest coral atolls in the world. It is a raised atoll, and as a result the terrain consists of a relatively high central limestone plateau with steep cliffs around the coast.
