The Pitcairn Islands are a group of five islands halfway between Easter Island and Tahiti, of which only the main island, Pitcairn, is inhabited. The islands form an overseas territory under the sovereignty of the United Kingdom. The island group lies in the southern Pacific Ocean at the eastern end of the Polynesian islands and is the only British territory in that region. It is one of the most remote places in the world, 5,300 kilometres from the nearest mainland. About three times a year, a ship travelling from New Zealand to the Panama Canal stops to deliver goods that were ordered six months earlier. The islands were first inhabited around 800 AD.
