Samoa, officially the Independent State of Samoa and known as Western Samoa until 1997, is a republic in Polynesia. The country comprises the western part of the Samoan Islands; the eastern part is the American territory of American Samoa. Samoa is furthermore surrounded by Tokelau to the north, Tonga to the south and Wallis and Futuna to the west. Samoa became independent from New Zealand in 1962.
