About this destination

South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands are a British overseas territory in the South Atlantic Ocean, with no permanent residents. For many travellers South Georgia is the highlight of a southern expedition: at Salisbury Plain and St Andrews Bay there are vast king penguin colonies, and elephant seals and fur seals lie on the beaches. In Grytviken you visit the old whaling station and the grave of explorer Ernest Shackleton. You can only get there by expedition ship, often combined with the Falkland Islands and Antarctica.
