Wallis and Futuna

Wallis and Futuna, a French protectorate since 1888, in 1961 following a referendum a French overseas territory, has been a French overseas collectivity in the Pacific Ocean since 2003, north-east of Fiji and west of Samoa. The territory in question consists of two island groups: the Wallis Islands with the roughly 100 km² Wallis (or 'Uvea in the local language) with some twenty islets around it, named after the British explorer Samuel Wallis, and the sister islands of Futuna and Alofi, also known as the Horn Islands, situated 230 km further to the south-west. Wallis and Futuna is located near the date line between New Caledonia and Tahiti, 18,000 km from Paris.
