Antigua and Barbuda is an island state in the eastern part of the Caribbean Sea, on the border with the Atlantic Ocean, consisting of the islands of Antigua, Barbuda and the uninhabited Redonda. The islands are part of the Leeward Islands, which belong to the Lesser Antilles. To the south of Antigua and Barbuda lies the French island of Guadeloupe, to the southwest the British Montserrat, to the west Saint Kitts and Nevis, and to the northwest the French territory of Saint-Barthélemy. Antigua and Barbuda is a member of the British Commonwealth and became independent from the United Kingdom on 1 November 1981. The country is a Commonwealth realm with Elizabeth II as head of state.
