Bolivia (also Bolivia; Aymara: Wuliwya, Quechua: Bulibiya, Guaraní: Volívia), officially the Plurinational State of Bolivia (Spanish: Estado Plurinacional de Bolivia, Aymara: Wuliwya Suyu, Quechua: Bulibya Mamallaqta, Guaraní: Tetã Volívia) is a republic in South America bordering Peru, Brazil, Paraguay, Argentina and Chile. Prior to European colonisation, the Andean region of Bolivia was part of the Inca Empire — the largest state in pre-Columbian America. The Spanish Empire conquered the region in the 16th century. During most of the Spanish colonial period, this area was called Upper Peru.
