Canada is a country in the north of North America. To the south it is bordered by the United States and to the east by the Atlantic Ocean. The western border is formed by the American state of Alaska and the Pacific Ocean, and to the north lies the Arctic Ocean. The capital of Canada is Ottawa and the largest cities are Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver and Calgary. With an area of 9,984,670 km², Canada is the second-largest country in the world after Russia. The name Canada is derived from the indigenous word kanata, meaning settlement.
