The Dominican Republic is a country on the island of Hispaniola, in the Caribbean region. It covers roughly two thirds of the island. To the west it borders Haiti, to the east lies the island of Puerto Rico, to the north the Atlantic Ocean and to the south the Caribbean Sea. The Republic was proclaimed on 27 February 1844. The capital, Santo Domingo de Guzmán, lies on the south coast and was founded in 1498, growing out of La Nueva Isabela, built in 1496.
