About this destination
Montserrat is a small British overseas territory in the Caribbean, nicknamed the 'Emerald Isle' for its Irish roots and green hills. In 1995 the Soufrière Hills volcano erupted; the old capital, Plymouth, was buried under ash and lies in an exclusion zone. From viewpoints you can see the abandoned town, while the north of the island is green and quiet. You reach Montserrat by ferry or small plane from Antigua.
