About this destination

Puerto Rico, formally an unincorporated territory of the United States, is located in the eastern part of the Caribbean Sea. It is part of the Greater Antilles, and lies east of the Dominican Republic, and west of the Virgin Islands. The original inhabitants, the Taíno, called the island Borinquén, which means Land of the brave leader. When Christopher Columbus discovered the island in 1493 he named it San Juan Bautista, after John the Baptist. The capital was given the name Ciudad de Puerto Rico, which means City of the rich port. Over time, sailors began calling the whole island Puerto Rico.
