Armenia (Armenian: Հայաստան, Hayastan), officially the Republic of Armenia (Armenian: Հայաստանի Հանրապետություն, Hayastani Hanrapetut'yun), is a mountainous country in the Southern Caucasus, located in the north-eastern part of the Armenian Highlands. Geographically, the country belongs to Asia, but in cultural and historical terms it considers itself as belonging to Europe and calls itself (like Georgia) a European country. Armenia has been a member of the Council of Europe since 2001. The country borders Georgia, Azerbaijan, Iran and Turkey.
