China is a large country with a very long history, an ancient civilisation and culture in East Asia. The Chinese heartland covers the fertile area between the Pacific Ocean to the east, the tropical regions of Southeast Asia to the south, and the great mountain ranges, steppes, taiga and deserts of Central Asia and Siberia to the west and north. Chinese people live scattered across all parts of the world. Around 1.4 billion Chinese people live in the People's Republic of China, making it the largest country in the world in terms of population.
