The Philippines, officially the Republic of the Philippines, is a republic in Southeast Asia. The archipelago consists of 7641 islands, of which the largest two are Luzon and Mindanao. These two islands together cover about two thirds of the surface area of the country, which at approximately 300,000 km² is more than seven times the size of the Netherlands and more than nine times the size of Belgium. The Philippines had almost 101 million inhabitants at the last official census in 2015. Due to the location of the Philippines near the Pacific Ring of Fire and the equator, the Philippines is prone to earthquakes and typhoons.
