Guyana

Guyana, officially the Co-operative Republic of Guyana, is a country in the north of South America, bordering Suriname, Brazil and Venezuela. Guyana has border disputes with Suriname and with Venezuela. Present-day Guyana is in fact part of a larger area that was also called Guyana (or Guiana) - after the Indigenous word for "land of many waters" - and stretched into Venezuela and Brazil. In the 17th and 18th centuries, present-day Guyana consisted of the four Dutch colonies of Pomeroon, Essequibo, Demerara and Berbice. In 1763, the slaves of the colony of Berbice, led by the slave Cuffy, rose up in the Berbice slave rebellion.
