Hong Kong (Chinese: 香港; pinyin: Xiānggǎng; Yale: Hēunggóng; jyutping: Hoeng1gong2; English: Hong Kong, 'fragrant harbour') is a Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China (just like Macau). The official name of the region is therefore Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China (traditional Chinese: 中華人民共和國香港特別行政區; simplified Chinese: 中华人民共和国香港特别行政区; pinyin: Zhōnghuá Rénmín Gònghéguó Xiānggǎng Tèbié Xíngzhèngqū). The region consists of 236 islands with a total area of 1,104 km² and borders the South China Sea. It has a population of 7,191,503 (2017).
