Israel, officially the State of Israel, (Hebrew: מדינת ישראל - Medinat Yisrael; Arabic: دولة اسرائيل - Dawlat Israïl) is a country in Asia, the Middle East and the Levant. Israel borders Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, Egypt and the Palestinian Territories, with Israel having occupied the West Bank and the Golan Heights since 1967 and brought them partly under its administration. The country has a coast on the Mediterranean Sea and a port on the Red Sea. In the land of Canaan, the Israelite kingdoms of Israel and Judah already formed during the Iron Age, but modern Israeli history begins in the twentieth century, in which the Balfour Declaration played a crucial role.
