Yemen (Arabic: اليَمَن, al-Yaman), officially the Republic of Yemen (Arabic: الجمهوريّة اليمنية, al-Jumhūrīyah al-Yamanīyah), is a republic in the south-east of the Middle East. The country lies in the south-west of the Arabian Peninsula and borders Saudi Arabia to the north and Oman to the east. To the west of Yemen lies the Red Sea and to the south of it lies the Gulf of Aden. The country belongs to the Arab League. The capital and also the largest city of the country is Sanaa. The country has approximately 28 million inhabitants and an area of 527,968 km². Yemen came into being on 22 May 1990 when North and South Yemen were united.
